Here is a selection of books that we have read and enjoyed, and that we thought might be on interest to those of you who want to find out more about corvids in greater detail than we can cover on this website. Once upon a time we used to link directly to Amazon to help you find them, but since we discovered that they sell Larsen Traps we can no longer in good conscience recommend you buy through them. Order them from a local bookseller if you can, we’re sure they’ll appreciate the custom!

A Beginner’s Guide to Rearing Wild Birds
Samantha Bedford
This book is useful for anyone interested in British wild birds. Packed full of useful information on what to do if you find an orphaned wild bird.

Corvus
Esther Woolfson
I was kindly sent a copy of this book by the publisher and I can’t thank them enough!
Corvus is beautifully written, informative, humourous and truthful. Esther has gained a great knowledge of corvid behaviour by spending each and every day for the past 16 years with them and getting to know her birds Chicken (a rook), Spike (a magpie) and recently Ziki (a carrion crow) on a personel level.
They become more than “pets” and she forms a strong bond with all three, Chicken in particular. This is the sort of good publicity that corvids so greatly need, and I am grateful that someone has taken the time to write this amazing account, well done Esther! No corvid lover should be without a copy!

Crow Country
Mark Cocker
Another gift from the same person, thanks, you know who you are! Not had chance to read this yet, so no review I’m afraid. Lovely presentation though and looks good! Watch this space!

Fowl Play: Twenty-Four Years With Andy the Talking Crow
Whitney J. Dough
This book was sent as a gift from a supporter and is a humorous account of life with an imprinted American crow.
Anyone who has ever been close to a corvid will relate to the antics Andy gets up to! People who are wanting to take on a pet corvid should also read this to see what they’re letting themselves in for!

Crows & Jays
Steve Madge and Hilary Burn
This is an identification guide that covers species of corvids from all over the world. It describes their appearance and behaviour in the wild and has some great colour plates of each individual species. Great for people who wish to learn about the corvidae family in its entirety, not just our native birds.
The Crows
Franklin Coombs
A fantastic book! Covers all our native crows and some other species in great detail; their behaviour in the wild, descriptions of each type and their posture and voice. Each species has its own section. A must for anyone who wants to learn everything about the behaviour of corvids.

Crow
Boria Sax
We love this book! It talks fondly about corvids in mythology and folklaw. The author obviously holds a great love of corvids – the text and wonderful illustrations are truly magical. Highly recommended! Visit the author’s website here.

Mind of the Raven
Bernd Heinrich
This book was sent to us by a supporter of Corvid Aid, and we cannot thank him enough! A great book – the author did a study of Raven’s behaviour in the wild and he here details his findings. The results are astounding! Essential for any corvid lover’s bookshelf!

Crow Planet
Lyanda Lynn Haupt
A gift from my Auntie in exchange for help with her snake phobia!
A beautiful book with a strong message about learning to appreciate the wildlife on our doorstep and showing that beauty can be found in the most common of species.
The book centres around the American Crow, so there is some difference in the behaviour described between those in the book and our own native species, but on the whole the two are quite similar.
Haupt has obviously spent a lot of time studying her “neighbours” and this shows throughout the book. Thoroughly recommended.
If you have read any other corvid related books which you think may be of interest, get in touch with us so that we can obtain a copy to read and add it to the list.
If you appreciate the work we do, then please consider donating to CorvidAid. You can give as little, or as much as you like. As Tesco say, "Every Little Helps"!
