Spider
AKA ‘The Acrobat’
Spider came to us from Anne a local lady who rescues birds of prey. He had been found with a damaged wing and was unable to fly, despite being a youngster.
Anne had had him several months in which time the wing failed to heal well enough for him to be returned to the wild. Birds of prey need to be able to fly perfectly for them to be able to hunt properly, and obviously a kestral needs to be able to hover too.
She approached us as she didn’t want to have him put down because of his age and she knew Jason was interested in birds of prey. She also thought that with Spider still being young it would be nice to be able to train him to the glove as he could still fly a short distance so he could have an varied and interesting life.
Spider got his name from his love of walking upside down along the roof of the aviary and from the way he scuttles across the floor. He is now manned and is good on the glove, although the flying idea didn’t go quite as well as hoped since he can only manage very small distances and tends to veer off to the side. His wing doesn’t seem to be causing him too many problems in the aviary at present, but it has dropped a little due to muscle wastage (which is often the case with broken/permanently damaged wings). Despite all that though, he is very settled in his aviary and is comfortable with meeting new people (unlike many of the corvids!)
